Car Air Cleaner Installation

Brent Ackley & George Vondriska
Duration:   2  mins

Description

Brent Ackley and George Vondriska are replacing the air cleaner with no breather valve on the El Camino. They explain old versus new and that you need the crankcase vent on one side and the PCV valve on the other side. You’ll find and understand why some things are a little bit different than they previously were.

You may not think about plumbing when you're working on a car engine, but we do have some re-plumbing that's happened here, right, Brent? A little bit. A couple of things. If we were going to clean these valve covers up and reuse those, it had the oil filler, the PCV valve was here, and then the crankcase breather vent was here. So because we're replacing those-- So out with those.

Yep, those are gone. If we were gonna use that crank case breather vent, the new air cleaner that we're putting on has got knockouts. So, and it comes with this little widget right here, that you would actually knock those holes out there and bolt this into place. So you could have the crank case, the original crankcase vent, but since we've replaced the valve covers Don't need the part. We don't need that part.

Now we put the PCV valve on the opposite side and the crankcase vent is actually part of oil filler. And you have to have both, you have to have a crankcase vent on one side, you have to have a PCV valve on the other side. So we've got a crankcase vent on this side in built right into the oil cap and then the PCV valve on that side. But it's good to know 'cause it, you know, it inherently raises some questions. We started with more holes than we ended up with.

Right. And so what's the dealio with that. And it's, you can tell just by looking at the cap configurations we've got two different things going on with the old oil cap versus the new one. So this is ready. I'm going to put the air cleaner on and we're going to start it up, give it a little test run and make sure we're not dripping any oil anywhere and we're ready for the next step.

All right. Throw that baby on there. I want to see how that looks. It's shiny. It's cool.

Oh, I left thumb prints on there. Don't yell at me. Well that takes care of our air cleaner installation and gives you the information you need to know about why things are a little bit different than the way they were. We're going to get this baby running and move forward from here.
